Producing good wine is an art, which attracts tasters, sommeliers, and connoisseurs. It is a universe where the passion for the “king of drinks” becomes a real culture.
More and more people speak about “organic”, “natural” and biodynamic wine (like ours is) as different from industrial wine, but sometimes confusedly. Here we’ll try to explain these differences and to give some clarifications.
Biodynamic wine, our philosophy
Biodynamic wine is obtained from Biodynamic Agriculture, consisting in a philosophical approach to the cultivation of the soil and its produce.
Biodynamic Agriculture was theorized in 1924 by the Austrian philosopher Rudolph Steiner (1861-1925): he observed the tight connection existing between the energies of the soil, of the living creatures and the astrological energies and affirmed that this bond was fundamental in the developing of any cultivation or natural growth.
According to Steiner, the energy produced by moon phases and cosmic cycles generated a source of nourishment for the soil and the plants. Steiner gave a series of conferences on Biodynamic Agriculture during which he illustrated the methods and the – wholly natural – instructions for the care of the soil (humus), in order to foster the health, the strength and the vitality of plants.
Biodynamic Agriculture, therefore, centres on the congenital activation of soil fertility, so that the plants can benefit from it and grow in a completely natural way and in respect of the natural cycles.
The three principles of Biodynamics are:
- To maintain soil fertility by releasing nourishing elements in it;
- To guarantee the health of the plants, so that they can resist diseases and parasites;
- To produce high-quality food.
Is biodynamic wine good?
Biodynamic Agriculture, as we have seen, originated much before Organic agriculture, although this second expression can be also referred to cultivations which preceded the introduction of chemical products. Today we can affirm that Biodynamic Agriculture includes Organic agriculture, because biodynamic produce is organic produce, and yet it is something more: first of all, its production involves each and every phase of the natural cycle.
An organic wine is considered 100% natural, because it is produced without the addition of synthetic substances or manipulations. A biodynamic wine, on the other hand, is not only 100% naturally produced, but it also originates from a complete connection with natural rhythms.
Then, is it Biodynamic or Organic?
If we had not been certain of the value and the high quality of biodynamic wine, we wouldn’t have embraced this complex but gratifying philosophy.
Tasting a wine produced by Biodynamic Agriculture means savouring the authentic scents of the soil, sweetened by the weather and the regular seasonal cycle. These wines have a distinguishing feature, which gathers the flavours and the essences of their producing procedures – a taste, like many of you have already been able to experience through our labels, which surprizes the gustatory cells.
And the label?
Up to 2012, the label of an organic wine had simply to run: “Wine made with organically grown grapes”, in accordance with the EC Regulation No. 834/2007. After 2012, producers can simply state “organic wine” on their labels.
Currently, biodynamic wine is regulated by the one and only globally recognized certification issued by Demeter Association (www.demeter.it). Podere Anima Mundi biodynamic wines will be soon obtain this important international certification.
Why choosing biodynamic wine?
Choosing biodynamic wine means choosing a richer product, closest to the soil, of which it maintains essences and energies.
The biodynamic method takes care of the soil while farming its fruits, therefore it is not only a choice as to taste, but a real philosophy, a concept renovating the relation between vine growers and nature, whose heartbeat they listen to and respect.
This is what you find in a glass of biodynamic wine: not only good taste and a beautiful colour, but especially the wisdom of the agriculture of the past, united to the updated awareness for the respect and the safeguard of the earth which hosts us.
